How To Upgrade Wordpress With DirectAdmin?

This post is specially dedicated to those using DirectAdmin and those that purchased our RM50 blogger package. We’ve been getting many request to upgrade their Wordpress but we don’t have the time. You should also learn to do it yourself if next time you decided to change server, you know what to do. I’ve simplified the steps into layman terms as I found out that the one provided by Wordpress is a bit technical.

Step 0: Before You Get Started
- Backup all your files in public_html folder using FTP.
- Backup your database, learn about it here
http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups#Direct_Admin
- Deactivate your plugins. A plugin might not be compatible with the new version, so it’s nice to check for new versions of them and deactivate any that may cause problems. You can reactivate plugins one-by-one after the upgrade.

Step 1: Replace WordPress files
- Get the latest WordPress. Either download and extract it to your computer or download it directly to the server.
- Copy the new files to your server using FTP, overwriting old files by upload it to the public_html folder using FTP.
- Overwrite all the files except wp-config.php, wp-content folder which has plugins folder and themes folder. If you overwrite them, all your modifiations to your template or plugins might be gone. Preserve the wp-config.php file in the root directory, as it contains your database sign-in information. If you see a file name wp-config-sample.php, just ignore it or no need to upload it.

Step 2: Upgrade your installation
- Visit the upgrade page. It will be at a URL like
http://www.yourdomainname.com/wordpress/wp-admin/upgrade.php
This updates your database to be compatible with the latest code, and before you do this your blog might look funny.

Step 3: Do something nice for yourself
Brag about it! Hahaha… You’re an expert now! :P
If you have caching enabled, your changes will appear to users more immediately if you clear the cache at this point (and if you don’t, you may get confused when you see the old version number in page footers when you check to see if the upgrade worked).

Sometimes your template or plugins will not be compatible with the new version, therefore if you activated them and found out that it didn’t work as it should, then you have to find those that are compatible with your new Wordpress version. The more plugins you have, the more pain in the ass it’ll be.

GOOD LUCK!
